The man fatally shot by a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) officer at the South Point Hotel this month had been charged earlier in California.
Two days before the December 8 shooting, Cesar Reyes II, 26, оf Indio, Calif., was charged оn suspicion оf possession оf child pornography, according tо Las Vegas TV station KTNV. The arrest resulted in Reyes reportedly being placed on administrative leave from his job as a probation officer in California’s Riverside County.
He was booked at the John Benoit Detention Center. Reyes posted a $30K bond before heading to Vegas.
While at Las Vegas’ South Point Hotel Casino & Spa, Reyes’ relatives alerted hotel security after family members spotted an apparent suicide note at his California residence.
When attempting to enter the hotel room, security guards heard what sounded like a gun being racked. They backed away from the door.
Local police were notified and also couldn’t convince Reyes to open the door. The department sent a SWAT team and specialized negotiators. After attempts failed to get him to surrender, SWAT team members eventually deployed explosives to open the hotel room door. At that point, Reyes charged at LVMPD officers who were in a hallway.
Reyes refused to drop his shotgun, which led LVMPD Officer Zachary Adam to shoot and kill Reyes.
Later, it was revealed the shotgun Reyes was holding had no bullets. He also was armed with a second firearm, which was described as a handgun, according to police.
Under routine LVMPD procedures in an officer-involved shooting, there will be a review to see if the use of deadly force was justified by the officer.
No officers nor other guests were injured, according to KTNV.
